Vilanculos ( Vilankulo ) is a Mozambican district in the Inhambane province , its main town is Vilankulo . The district is located in the east of the province and borders in the north with the district Inhassor , in the west with the districts Mabote and Massinga , in the south with the province Massinga and in the east with the Indian Ocean .

The district has an area of 5,856 square kilometers and 155,134 inhabitants (2013).
The climate is tropical dry inland and tropical humid on the coast. Annual rainfall reaches 1,500 millimeters on the coast, with February and March being the wettest months.

The population density in Vilanculos district is 26 people per square kilometer.
Vilanculos has a young population, but unlike other districts of Mozambique, the age group between 25 and 50 is stronger. It is also noticeable that the number of female residents is significantly higher (54.5 percent) than the number of male residents (as of 2013). While there are more than 60 percent Christians in the province of Inhambane , it is less than 30 percent in the district of Vilanculos (as of 2007). |

Facilities and services
There are 119 primary schools ( Primárias) in the district , of which 73 are public schools and 46 are private schools. Of the eight secondary schools (Secundárias) all are public (as of 2013). In Vilanculos there is a hospital and nine health centers (as of 2012).

Economy and Infrastructure
In 2007, 1.5 percent of the population had access to electricity, and over two percent owned a car (this is the average in the province).
Agriculture
In 2005 there were 26,000 farms in the district with an average size of 1.5 hectares. In terms of area, maize was cultivated the most (15,600 hectares), with cassava (8,300 tons) and maize (4,000 tons) producing the highest yields. Beans and peanuts were also grown.
Natural resources
Titan is mined and Erdas is mined in the Vilanculos district.
traffic
The national road EN1 runs in the eastern area in a north-south direction through the entire district. There are also 220 kilometers of secondary roads.
Vilankulo has an international airport with direct flights to Johannesburg, Beira, Inhambane and Maputo.
tourism
The main attraction of the district is the Bazaruto Archipelago. This group of islands off the coast of Mozambique in the Indian Ocean is part of the 1,400 square kilometer Bazaruto National Park , one of the largest marine protected areas in Africa. It offers undamaged coral reefs, dolphins, turtles, whales and is best known for its population of the endangered dugongs .
