Bazaruto (Portuguese Ilha do Bazaruto ) is a sandy island about 80 kilometers southeast of the mouth of the Sava River in Mozambique . The main town is Asneira on the west coast.
geography
The Bazaruto Archipelago is located between Vilanculos and Inhassoro ( Inhambane Province ), about ten kilometers from the coast. It belongs to the Vilanculos district of Inhambane Province. Bazaruto is, along with Magaruque , Benguerra and St. Carolina , one of the main islands of the archipelago. The island is 31 km long from north to south and up to 6 km wide.
The waters around the island are rich in species, including the endangered manatees and the Chinese white dolphin .
history
In the 1970s the archipelago was declared a national park. In February 2007, Bazaruto was hit by Cyclone Favio.
