Vilankulo (formerly Vilanculos ) is a coastal city in Mozambique in the Vilanculos district of Inhambane Province .

Vilankulo has 40,048 inhabitants (2009). Many of the residents use the place name "Vilankulo" as a family name.
history
Vilankulo is named after the chief Vilankulo. Some of the "bairros" (suburbs) are named after his sons. During the colonial period, the name was changed to Vilanculos , as the Portuguese do not use the letter K often and usually use the "sch" sound value of the letter S. After independence, the original place name was reintroduced. Nowadays the district is called Vilanculos and the city of Vilankulo.
economy
Vilankulo has an international airport that serves several regional destinations, including Johannesburg , Maputo , Swaziland and Durban . Vilankulo has grown tremendously over the past decade and is the recipient of significant foreign investment in its tourist infrastructure. Daus operate between the city and the Bazaruto archipelago .
Sports
There is a local football club called Vilankulo Futebol Clube (VFC), which is the first official Vilankulo club to be recognized by the FMF (Mozambican Football Federation).
