Mao (card game)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mao is a card game for four or more players and is related to Mau-Mau .

Rules of the game

The most important rule is not to explain the rules to new players. Their only way to find out the rules is through observation and trial and error . A player who breaks a rule is penalized with an extra card from the deck. The punishing player must name the wrong action, but he must not explain the associated rule. If the card was wrongly given, he must keep the card.

Since there is no uniform set of rules, the other rules differ depending on the region or player group.

The aim of the game is to get all the cards out of your hand. Each player is given an equal number of cards at the start of the game, often five or seven cards. The players, one after the other, place one card face up on a pile. Any card can be played if the card color or card value matches the previous card. If the player cannot discard, he must draw a card from the deck and carry out a certain action in many variants.

In addition, there are rules that prescribe, after certain actions, that certain actions are taken or that certain words are spoken.

Some cards can have special meanings:

  • A card changes the order of play
  • The next player has to sit out at the ace
  • As a rule, you can always play a pawn and choose a new suit of cards
  • All spades must be named, e.g. B. If a player plays a king of spades, that player must say 'king of spades'
  • On a seven, the next player must draw a card or two
