Mapleville

Mapleville is a village in Burrillville , Providence County , Rhode Island , United States . It has an area of ​​4.18 km² and 1142 inhabitants. More than 98% of the population are white. The village has a post office, a fire station , two churches, a library and various shops. The local area is mostly forested, the place is traversed by the Chepachet River.

history

Mapleville was originally a settlement of mill workers. The mill rights on the banks of the Chepachet River were claimed in 1845 when Darius Lawton had a mill built for the manufacture of textiles. Gradually several houses, a pension and other buildings were built. The operation was later taken over by James Legg, who ran the James Legg & Company (later Mapleville Manufacturing Company). Produced Kashmirtuch and tweeds . The operation was later taken over by Fletcher's sons, and the mill was finally auctioned off in 1898.

Around 1900 Joseph Fletcher bought the mill, had it restored, built another mill, and built more houses. The mills still exist today and are used by a recycling company .
