A Rafraîchisseur ( French : "freshener") was an atomizer .

Rafraîchisseurs were used to distribute perfumes in rooms. They consisted of a vessel for the liquid in which a vertical tube stood, the upper end of which was close to the end of another, horizontal tube. If the horizontal tube was blown, the liquid was sucked in and sprayed as it emerged from the vessel.

A droophor works in a similar way .

A rafraîchisseur is mentioned in Theodor Fontane's novel Effi Briest .
