St. Albertus Magnus (Essen-Katernberg)
The church of St. Albertus Magnus in the Essen district of Katernberg was built from 1983 to 1986 as a Roman Catholic ( Latin ) church and profaned in 2008 . As the church of Mar Addai and Mar Mari , it now serves the Chaldean Catholic parish of the same name .
history
The church was a parish church and belonged to the parish of St. Nicholas . The first service was celebrated in the new church on Easter Vigil 1986. However, the altar was still missing. The faithful had to wait until the feast of St. Albertus Magnus , their patron saint, on November 15, 1988 to celebrate the consecration of the church . The last church service was held on January 13, 2008. Then St. Albertus Magnus was given to the Chaldean Catholic Christians. On March 15, 2009, they celebrated the establishment of the congregation in a pontifical office with Auxiliary Bishop Franz Vorrath .
The architectural design comes from Gisberth Hülsmann . The outside of the church is reminiscent of an old Roman villa. The design idea for the interior was “God's good room”.
Previous construction
The former St. Albertus Magnus Church was built from 1955 to 1956. In 1978 it was closed due to mountain damage and demolished in 1982. Compensation payments from Ruhrkohle AG formed the financial basis for the new building. The rectory, which was also affected by mountain damage, was saved.
