Franz Vorrath (born July 9, 1937 in Essen-Stoppenberg ) is a German Roman Catholic clergyman and auxiliary bishop emeritus in Essen .

Life

Born in Essen-Stoppenberg, he grew up in the neighboring district of Katernberg . In 1957 he graduated from the Leibniz Gymnasium in Altenessen and then studied Catholic theology and philosophy in Bonn and Münster .

He was ordained a deacon on December 22, 1961.

On July 26, 1962, Bishop Franz Hengsbach donated Franz Vorrath to be ordained a priest in Essen Cathedral . After ordination he gained his first experience in pastoral care as a chaplain in St. Peter and Paul in Witten-Herbede (1962–1968) and later as a chaplain in St. Petrus Canisius in Duisburg-Wanheimerort (1968–1975). During his second chaplaincy from 1973 to 1975 he was city ​​youth chaplain and president of the BDKJ City Association Duisburg.

In 1975 he became diocesan youth pastor and president of the BDKJ diocesan association in the diocese of Essen. He held these tasks until 1981. From 1982 to 1986 he was diocesan president of the KAB in the diocese of Essen. At the same time he took on the role of pastor of St. Maria Königin in Essen-Haarzopf. In 1986 he became pastor of St. Joseph in Oberhausen-Styrum. A position that he held until his appointment as auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Essen. In 1986 he was appointed dean of the dean's office in Oberhausen-Mitte, in 1987 city dean of Oberhausen and in 1989 as non-resident cathedral capitular at the Essen cathedral church.

On November 22, 1995 he was appointed titular bishop of Vicus Aterii and auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Essen by Pope John Paul II . On January 7, 1996, he received his episcopal ordination from the then Ruhr Bishop Hubert Luthe in the Essen Cathedral Church . At the same time he became Episcopal Vicar for Caritas and chairman of the Caritas Association for the Diocese of Essen eV He chose the motto Quodcumque dixerit vobis facite ("Everything that HE tells you does that") for his episcopal office . In July 1996 he was appointed resident cathedral capitular at the Essen cathedral church.

After the bishop's chair in Essen had become vacant on March 29, 2009 due to the appointment of the previous bishop of the Ruhr, Felix Genn, to the bishop’s chair in Münster , he was elected diocesan administrator of the diocese of Essen on March 30, 2009 by the cathedral chapter . He held this office until the inauguration of Franz-Josef Overbeck on December 20th of the same year.

On September 23, 2012, the age-related retirement of supplies was announced in a solemn pontifical office. Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation on March 14, 2014 and at the same time appointed Wilhelm Zimmermann as Vorrath's successor.
