Wilhelm Zimmermann (born June 16, 1948 in Gelsenkirchen ) is a Roman Catholic clergyman and auxiliary bishop in Essen .

Life

After three years of training, Wilhelm Zimmermann initially worked as a clerk and in 1973 passed the Abitur examination at the Episcopal Evening High School in Essen. On May 30, 1980 in Gelsenkirchen he received the sacrament of ordination by the Essen bishop Franz Hengsbach .

After his first position as chaplain in Hattingen , he became diocesan youth pastor and president of the BDKJ in the diocese of Essen in 1984 . In 1985 he was appointed cathedral vicar and in 1989 Bishop Franz Hengsbach appointed him his personal secretary. In 1991 he was also dean of the Essen cathedral and in 1992 dean of the Essen-Mitte dean's office.

In 1996, Zimmermann was appointed Dome of Honor and at the same time took over the parish of St. Gertrud in Essen. In 2002 he took over the parish of St. Urbanus in Gelsenkirchen-Buer and became city dean for Gelsenkirchen. In 2008 he was appointed non-resident cathedral chapter .

Pope Francis appointed him titular bishop of Benda and auxiliary bishop in Essen on March 14, 2014 . The Bishop of Essen, Franz-Josef Overbeck , donated him episcopal ordination on June 29 of the same year . Co-consecrators were Auxiliary Bishop Ludger Schepers and Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus Franz Vorrath .

On April 17, 2014 the diocese of Essen announced the appointment of Zimmermann as resident cathedral chapter by Bishop Franz-Josef Overbeck. On July 1 of the same year, Bishop Franz-Josef Overbeck appointed him Episcopal Vicar for Ecumenism and Interreligious Dialogue.

Wilhelm Zimmermann was appointed a member of the Ecumenical Commission and its sub-commission for religious relations with Judaism as well as the sub-commission for the interreligious dialogue of the Commission on the World Church (X) at the 2014 autumn general assembly of the German Bishops' Conference and confirmed in 2016.
