Mara des Bois

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mara des Bois is a remontant variety of the garden strawberry ( Fragaria × ananassa , Syn. Fragaria × magna ). The fruits have an intense taste of wild strawberries, which is why they are offered in retail outlets and restaurants as delicacy or gourmet strawberries.

Variety characteristics

Properties of the fruit

The fruits of Mara des Bois are small to medium-sized with a fruit weight between 11 grams and 16 grams, whereby the later ripening fruits are slightly smaller than the spring fruits. They are egg-shaped with a calyx on top. The fruits are medium to purple-red on the outside and shiny; inside the pulp at the edge of the fruit is orange-red, towards the center of the fruit light red.

Mara des Bois has a medium firm pulp, and if harvested later it is soft. The fruits have a medium-sized cavity in the center. Although Mara des Bois is a cultivated strawberry variety, the fruits have a very intense taste of wild strawberries ( Fragaria vesca ) and give off a strong strawberry scent. They are high in sugar and medium acid.

Properties of the plant

Mara des Bois is a remontant variety. The first fruits ripen depending on the location from the end of May to mid-June, after which the plant bears fruit with interruptions until the end of October. For a remontant strawberry variety, the spring yield is relatively high, the total yield is overall to be classified as medium.

The plants are weak-growing and have a flat to spherical habit, with little tendency to form runners. They are resistant to leaf diseases and powdery mildew and moderately susceptible to fruit rot and rhizome rot . There is a clear susceptibility to gray mold rot ( Botrytis cinerea ). Due to the long ripening period until late summer and autumn, it is also susceptible to thrips .

marketing

Mara des Bois is a breed by the French breeder Andre Marionnet from Soings-en-Sologne. He bred this strawberry variety from a cross of the varieties ( Gento x Ostara ) x ( Redgauntlet x Korona ). The name Mara des Bois was chosen because of the intense taste of wild strawberries and is derived from Fraisier des bois , the French word for wild strawberry .

Mara des Bois has been marketed by Marionnet SARL since 1991. For the variety there is plant variety protection under the Plant Variety Protection Act , but it does not have an approval. Due to the medium-firm pulp, the fruits only have a shelf life of 3 days when refrigerated, which makes it difficult to market the fruits as fresh produce. This is why the variety has been offered in Europe since the mid-1990s, primarily for self-sufficient cultivation in home gardens. Due to its intense wild strawberry aroma, the variety is nevertheless increasingly being marketed as a raw fruit or processed product under the label delicacy or gourmet strawberry in retail or restaurants, which is why it has also become interesting for commercial cultivation in recent years.

In the USA, where the variety was patented from 1991, it has so far only been grown to a very limited extent.

According to the breeder, the estimated annual production of Mara des Bois strawberries is 10,000 tons.

Under the name Strawberry Mara des Bois , a cosmetics manufacturer offers a range of body care products with a wild strawberry aroma.
