The main mine in the area is the Mbada mine .

history

In 2008, the Zimbabwean military forcibly took control of the mines. According to information from human rights groups, around 200 people are said to have died.

In 2009, the trade in diamonds from the Marange region was temporarily banned due to the Kimberley Process . At the end of June 2011, two companies were allowed to export diamonds again as they now meet the requirements of the Kimberley Process.

In August 2011, the BBC reported forced labor and torture in the mines by the police and the military. There are said to be two torture camps in the area. One is said to be near the Mbada mine and another near Muchena . Mining Minister Obert Mpfofu denied the allegations and EU Foreign Affairs Representative Catherine Ashton called for "solid evidence" to support the allegations, as previous European Union inquiries did not reveal anything concrete.
