Marathonisi from a distance |
Marathonisi ( Greek Μαραθονήσι ( n. Sg. )) Is a small, uninhabited island in the west of the bay of Laganas about 2.5 kilometers off the south coast of the Greek island of Zakynthos in the Ionian Sea .
On the main beach of the island, which sticks out into the sea like a tongue, hawksbill turtles ( Caretta caretta ) lay their eggs in the summer months . The other side of Marathonisi is rocky and there are several caves.
Viewed from a distance, the silhouette of the lush island is reminiscent of a turtle, which is why Marathonisi is also known as the “turtle island” among tourists.
