Marcinkonys
Marcinkonys ( Polish Marcinkańce ) is a village and center of the eponymous administrative district of the Rajongemeinde Varėna in southern Lithuania , 24 km southwest of the core city of Varėna . Its settlement area is 143 hectares, the largest in any Lithuanian village.
The place is on the railway line from Vilnius via Varėna to Hrodna in Belarus . Road connections lead to Druskininkai , Merkinė and Varėna. In the village there is a train station, the wooden church of the apostles Simon and Jude Taddäus, an ethnographic museum and a branch of the Tadas Ivanauskas zoom museum. The administration and information center of the Dzūkija National Park and the administration of the Čepkeliai nature reserve are also located here . Bicycles and canoes can be rented on site. There is also an inn ("Ėglis") in the village. In the area there are inland dunes and the Girinis-Weg-für-Heilkunde with a length of 3.6 km.
history
Marcinkonys was first mentioned in 1637. On June 1, 2004, the local coat of arms was certified by a decree of the President of Lithuania.
