from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marcos Pérez (* 1527 in Antwerp , † 1572 in Basel ) was an entrepreneur from Antwerp in Basel.

life and work

Marcos Pérez was a merchant and banker of Spanish-Jewish origin in Antwerp. Around 1560 he converted from Catholicism to Calvinism. In 1567 he settled in Basel as a religious refugee, where he acquired citizenship a year later. From here he coordinated the fight against the Spanish troops in the Netherlands. His project for a large silk manufacture in Basel, where religious refugees could have been employed in large numbers, failed because his condition of setting up his own Calvinist pastor was not accepted.
