Marcos Rivas Barrales (born November 25, 1947 ), also known by the nickname El Mugrosito (the filthy finch ), is a retired Mexican soccer player who has played in all possible positions (including that of goalkeeper) within just six years, and thus also is referred to as El hombre 11 . This designation, which can be roughly translated as the eleventh man , is intended to make it clear that he could be used in all eleven positions and has also proven this. His preferred position was in midfield .

biography

society

Rivas began his career in 1968 with his favorite club Atlante . Although he is said to have had a more lucrative offer from city rival America , he went to Atlante because this decision was an "affair of the heart" for him.

During his six years at Atlante, he held all eleven positions. Including that of the goalkeeper: during a guest appearance at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario against the Club Universidad Nacional on March 25, 1973, Atlantes goalkeeper Rafael Puente was expelled from the field and because the substitution quota was already exhausted at that time, a field player had to go into the goal. The multi-talented Rivas took this burden voluntarily and even saved a penalty kicked by Leonardo Cuéllar . But even he was ultimately unable to prevent his Atlantistas from losing 2-0.

In 1974 he was sold to the university club from Guadalajara , for which he played a total of three years and in whose service he ended his active career in the 1977/78 season. In between he played one season (1976/77) for Club León .

National team

His debut in the Mexican national team was Rivas in the second half of the friendly game played on February 18, 1970 against Bulgaria, which was won 2-0 and to which he contributed a goal. Although he only played six international matches - two of them full-length and the remaining four over half-time each - he scored three goals in the dress of the national team. He scored the other two goals on April 26, 1970 against Romania (3: 2) and on April 29, 1970 against Ecuador (4: 2). He played his last international match (in full) on September 20, 1973 against Chile (0: 1).

The highlight of his national team career was his participation in the 1970 World Cup , which was held in his own country, but was not used.

In the circle of his national team- mates , he also received the unflattering nickname el Mugrosito . While he was in the training camp's swimming pool with some of his comrades, it began to rain and the water became cloudy. Rivas left the pool and Mario Pérez Guadarrama from league rivals America said jokingly to the remaining players: "Now look at the dirt from Atlante that swims here in the pool." Marcos Rivas has had this nickname since then.

Remarks

  1. Although the comment was intended as a joke, it has a real background that can be traced back to the traditional rivalry between the clubs for which the two players played. Pérez 'Club América has always been considered an upscale club, while Rivas' Atlante has been considered a representative of the lower class for decades.
