Marcus Bassaeus Rufus

Marcus Bassaeus Rufus was a Roman knight and praetorian prefect under Emperor Mark Aurel from approx. 169 to 179 .

Life

The life dates of Marcus Bassaeus Rufus are largely unknown. Little information about his career can be found in the Historia Augusta and the books of Cassius Dio . He was of low origin and without the usual education. He rose in the army to primus pilus , reached procuratures in Spain , Noricum and Gaul / Germania . He became a rationibus , praefectus vigilum , praefectus Aegypti 168/169 and praefectus praetorio 169 to 179 AD. He was awarded the ornamenta consularia , and after death with three statues in Rome.
