Marcus Claudius Fronto

Marcus Claudius Fronto († 170 AD) was a Roman senator and military officer.

Fronto probably came from the Roman province of Asia . His senatorial career ( cursus honorum ) is handed down through two inscriptions. Accordingly, he held the bursary , aedility and praetur under Antoninus Pius . Under Emperor Lucius Verus , he commanded a Praetorian army during the Parthian War until 165. Fronto was then apparently in the same year - together with other senators - charged with setting up the Legions II Italica and III Italica in Italy. On the occasion of the triumph over the Parthians on October 22nd, 166 he received the dona militaria and was probably responsible for public construction in Rome as curator operum locorumque publicorum the next year . Its suffect consulate cannot be precisely dated; it is believed to be in the year 166 or a little earlier.

During the Marcomannic Wars , his positions changed rapidly; So in 168 he accompanied Lucius Verus as comes to the Danube and took over the governorship of the province of Moesia superior (Upper Moesia ). In 168, before the death of Lucius Verus, his command was extended to the troops in the province of Dacia Apulensis . In 169, after the death of Lucius Verus, he gave up command in Upper Moesia and took over command in the entire province of Dacia (Dacia). In the same year or 170 the armies of the entire province of Dacia and also of Upper Moesia were united under his command. Fronto fell in the battle against the Teutons and Jazygen in 170 and received a statue on the Trajan's forum .
