Marcus Ulpius Yarhai
Marcus Ulpius Yarhai (Palmyrenian: mrqws ʾlpys yrhy ; Greek Μᾶρκος Οὔλπιος Ἰαραιος ) was a caravan leader from Palmyra . He is known from a number of inscriptions that attest to his work from around 155 to 159 AD. His father was a certain Hairan, son of Abgar. His traditional inscriptions mostly come from statue bases and are written in two languages (Greek and Palmyrenian). According to this, at least 12 statues of him were erected in Palmyra. His caravans led to Charax Spasinu and Scythia (this refers to a region in India at the mouth of the Indus , the name of which comes from the Indo-Scythian kingdom ). The inscriptions prove the important role of Palmyra in east-west trade.
