The Mare Insularum - Latin for archipelago - is a marginal sea of the Oceanus Procellarum on the moon . The name is still rarely used because it was not named until 1976 by the International Astronomical Union .
The mare has a mean diameter of 513 km and is located on the western half of the front of the moon at the selenographic coordinates 7.5 ° north and 30.5 ° west. It is located south of the Mare Imbrium in the area of the conspicuous radiation craters Copernicus and Kepler . In the west it merges into the extensive Oceanus Procellarum, the northern border is formed by the Montes Carpatus . In the east lies the Sinus Aestuum , in the south the Mare Cognitum .
