Margaret Longespée, 4th Countess of Salisbury

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Margaret Longespée, 4th Countess of Salisbury (around 1254, † 1309 ) was an English noblewoman.

Margaret Longespée was the only child of William III Longespée and Maud de Clifford , so she was the heir to her father's estates and the title of Earl of Salisbury . Her father was badly wounded in a tournament in 1256 and therefore entrusted Margaret de Lacy, Countess of Lincoln , Simon de Montfort, 6th Earl of Leicester , Hugh le Despenser and Walter de Ludham to negotiate for her with Henry de Lacy , the young heir by Edmund de Lacy, 2nd Earl of Lincoln to marry. After extensive negotiations, the marriage was confirmed by the king on December 23, 1256. Shortly afterwards Margaret's father died, whereupon the king appointed her father-in-law Edmund de Lacy as her guardian. When he suddenly died in 1258, the king appointed Margaret de Lacy and Edmund's widow Adelasia to be administrators of the Lacy's estates.

The wedding of the two young heirs took place in 1257. Margaret had at least three children from her marriage to Henry de Lacy:

  • Edmund († 1308)
  • John
  • Alice (1281-1348)

Her two sons both died in an accident and left no heirs, making her daughter Alice, who was married to Thomas of Lancaster , her heir. A few months after her death, her husband married the young Joan Martin , but died a little later, making Alice his heir.
