from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stephen Longespée (* 1216 ; † 1260 ) was an English knight who served as Seneschal of Gascony and Justiciar of Ireland .

Stephen Longespée was a younger son of William Longespée, 3rd Earl of Salisbury and his wife Ela of Salisbury , so he was a cousin of King Henry III of England . The king married him around 1243 to Emeline de Ridelsford , daughter of Walter de Ridelsford and widow of the Anglo-Irish Lord Hugh de Lacy, 1st Earl of Ulster . His wife was one of the heiresses of her grandfather Walter de Ridelisford, so that Longespée acquired properties in Connacht and Leinster in Ireland. In 1255 Longespée was appointed Seneschal of Gascony by the king. When the heir to the throne, Lord Eduard, received Gascony as part of his apanage in 1256 , there were repeated disputes when the king intervened in the administration of Gascony via Longespée. After Lord Edward's return to England in 1255, Longespée remained as a Seneschal in Gascony until 1257, before he too returned to England. When Lord Eduard was reluctant to accept the Provisions of Oxford in 1258 , Longespée was one of the four advisors who were put on his side to help him accept the reform program. As the only one of these four advisers, Longespée was counted among the followers of the heir to the throne in early 1259. In 1259 he became Justiciar of Ireland . His early death further weakened English rule in north west Ireland.

Longespée had at least two children with his wife Emeline:

  • Emeline de Longespée ⚭ Maurice fitz Maurice
  • Ela de Longespée (1245–1276) ⚭ Roger la Zouche
