Margaret Morris method

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Margaret Morris Method (MMM) is a training method for dance physical formation that was developed in the 1920s by the English dancer and physiotherapist Margaret Morris . The abbreviation "MMM" stands for the name of the international association that promotes the spread of this training method under the name Margaret Morris Movement .

To the method

MMM is structured in eleven levels ("colors"), with each level containing a series of defined movement sequences for:

  • Agility and coordination
  • Balances
  • Opposition movements
  • Breathing exercises
  • free movement

Training according to the MMM dance method has positive physical effects on the back, joints, posture, muscles and flexibility; By learning the movement sequences specified in the method, the dancers should develop a good body awareness and thus bring their own body into an appropriate posture. The natural grace of your own body is strengthened and developed. The movement sequences of the first stages are suitable for everyone and can be flexibly adapted to individual requirements or age groups (which, in contrast to other performance-oriented dance methods, have no limits). Success consists in recognizing and developing one's own diverse possibilities of physical movement capacities.

The pillars of the Margaret Morris Method are:

  • Breathing as an integral part of the movement, based on the perfect breathing of Hatha Yoga
  • to train the mobility of the spine
  • the intensification of the body's natural counter-movements

Depending on the group of participants, different accents are set in the class, creativity and improvisation are given greater importance. MMM is also very suitable as professional dance training, as a supplementary training for singers and actors as well as basic training for many sports. In addition to the eleven-step method, Margaret Morris also developed dance technique exercises and other series of movements for children and people with restricted mobility.
