Margaret Singana , born Margaret M'cingana (* 1938 in Queenstown ; † April 22, 2000 ) was a South African singer who is known in southern Africa as Lady Africa .

life and work

Margaret Singana was born in Queenstown in what is now the Eastern Cape Province in 1938 . She worked as a domestic worker in Johannesburg in the 1950s , where one of her employers discovered her talent for singing. In 1972 she recorded Good Feelings with her band and became the first black artist to make it onto the Dutch Radio 5 hit parade. Her song I Never Loved a Man the Way I Loved You became a hit.

She was also a musical singer. Her first appearances were in Sponono by Alan Paton and Sikalo by Gibson Kente . In 1974 Margaret Singana became lead singer in the musical The Warrior by Bertha Egnos and Gail Lakier . The band, which was responsible for the music in the piece, was announced with "Ipi 'N Tombia featuring Margaret Singana", so that this musical was known as Ipi Tombi (German roughly: "Young girl"). It became a success in South Africa and internationally. The most famous songs from Ipi Tombi are The Warrior , Mama Tembu's Wedding and Ipi Tombi .

Margaret Singana suffered from poor health after suffering a stroke in 1978. In 1986, she had but with are Growing We , the theme song of the television series Shaka Zulu , once an international hit, to No. 1 on the Dutch charts brought it 1989th

Margaret Singana received many prizes and awards for her work, including the Critic Award 1976/1977 from the British music magazine Music Week .
