Margot Benacerraf (born August 14, 1926 in Caracas , Venezuela ) is a French-Venezuelan film director .

Life

Benacerraf studied film and theater studies in Paris. She was influenced by Italian neorealism. Her main work Araya (1959) is shot in this style . Araya describes the life of the salt works on the Venezuelan Araya peninsula. The film also won the Critics' Prize at the 1959 Cannes International Film Festival . This made Araya the first Venezuelan film ever to win an international film award.
