Dormition Cathedral (Wolodymyr-Wolynskyj)
The Assumption Cathedral (also Assumption Cathedral , Mstislav Cathedral ) is the main church in Wolodymyr-Wolynskyj in Ukraine . It was consecrated in 1160 and is the oldest surviving church in Volhynia . The Dormition Cathedral is the main cathedral of the Volodymyr-Volynskyj and Kovel eparchy .
history
The cathedral was built from 1156 to 1160 under Prince Mstislav of Volhynia . In 1596 she went with the eparchy to the new Ukrainian Uniate Church . In 1683 it was badly damaged in a city fire. It was only rebuilt in the baroque style in 1753 . From 1772 it was used as a storage room and fell into disrepair.
From 1896 to 1900 it was reconstructed true to the original. Since 1996 it has been the main cathedral of the Volodymyr-Wolynskyj and Kovel eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate .
In the cathedral there are burial places of six Volhyn princes, two bishops and other people.
