The Catholic pilgrimage church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary , also called Mariazell , is a monument near Ried .

history

According to a forecast of the construction of the chapel to go Renata of Lorraine , wife of Duke William V. back. During a stay in Friedberg Castle , the Duchess is said to have got lost in the then still extensive forests. She made a vow to build a chapel if it was found safe. Maria Hilf was then erected at this point. Allegedly the miraculous image was also painted by the Duchess herself.

The duke and his wife donated a perpetual mass and a benefit for the chapel in 1598 . It survived the Swedish War unscathed, which was interpreted as a miracle and significantly increased the influx. The building was therefore demolished in 1683 and rebuilt in its current (expanded) form. The church was supposed to be demolished during the secularization in 1809. This was prevented by the communities of Ried and Zillenberg by buying it for 350 guilders.
