The Maria Cunitz monument in Schweidnitz is located on the market square in Schweidnitz in front of the Museum of the History of Merchants in Świdnica .

History and description

The monument was created by the sculptor Stanisław Strzyżyński from Nałęczów. It was created as part of the Maria Cunitz Year 2008 project in Schweidnitz and was financed by the city administration. It was unveiled on March 31, 2009.

The monument shows the figure of the astronomer Maria Cunitz (1610–1664), who spent a significant part of her life in Schweidnitz, the capital of the then Bohemian hereditary principality of Schweidnitz-Jauer . She is sitting on a bench and looking at the sky. In her hands she holds her work Urania propitia and an armillary sphere . The signature of Maria Cunitia, taken from her letter to Johannes Hevelius , is engraved on the cover of the book .
