Maria Luisa Busi (born March 24, 1964 in Milan ) is an Italian journalist . She has been registered in the professional journalists' register since June 1, 1989. She has been the main news anchor for Rai 1 for the state broadcaster RAI since 1992 .

Life

On May 21, 2010, she submitted her voluntary resignation, as she did not agree with the instructions of the editor-in-chief Augusto Minzolini, who was proposed for this post by Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi in 2009 .

In February 2010, Maria Luisa Busi made a critical judgment in a live broadcast about the situation after the earthquake in L'Aquila in 2009, as she judged it to be more difficult than it was presented by TG1. In March 2010, Maria Luisa Busi commented in an interview on the layoffs of her colleagues Tiziana Ferrario, Paolo Di Giannantonio, Piero Damosso and Massimo De Strobel, initiated by the editor-in-chief of TG1 Augusto Minzolini. The starting point for this was Busi's refusal to sign a communiqué drawn up by Minzolini regarding the Mills affair  - the long-standing and convicted lawyer of the Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconis. Minzolini responded to her with an official warning in which he accused the journalist of having acted unauthorized, as she disclosed, among other things, that the viewer ratings of the news program TG1 had plummeted since Minzolini's takeover.

After heated, public discussions and internal editorial disputes about the information content, level of priority and objectivity of the messages sent by TG1, Busi left her post as spokesperson for the most important Italian news program on May 21, 2010 with a public letter to Minzolini in which she wrote the Explains the reasons for their resignation:

“[…] A journalist has only one means of defending his or her own professional convictions: not to sign an article. A newscaster can only pull his / her face back in this case. The viewer's trust is in fact based on the moderator's commitment to the news he / she presents [...]. "

- Maria Luisa Busi

Busi received both criticism and approval of her resignation, including from Paolo Garimberti, President of the Parliamentary Commission on Public Media Independence, who stated, among other things, that the TG1 deliberately used infotainment in order to suppress important news.

Antonio Di Pietro , chairman of the “Italian Values Party” ( Italia dei Valori ), commented on Busi's sensational resignation with the words:

"Our unreserved solidarity goes to Maria Luisa Busi, a professional journalist who has become another countless victim of an abuse of power by mercenaries who receive their orders from the Palazzo Grazioli (the residence of Silvio Berlusconi in Rome)."

- Antonio Di Pietro

After resigning as news anchor at Rai 1, Maria Luisa Busi moved to Rai 3 in autumn 2010 . From October 2010, she directed a weekly primetime background program. The program Articolo 3 was canceled after a month due to a lack of viewers. The show achieved a market share of 4% while Rai 3 has an average market share of 9%.

Awards

Maria Luisa Busi has won various journalism awards, including Ilaria Alpi e Saint Vincent (presented by the former Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi ). In 2001 she was also voted the most popular journalist of the “Campionato delle telegiornaliste”.
