Maria in the Green Valley
Maria im Grünen Tal is a pilgrimage church in Retzbach in the Bavarian district of Main-Spessart . It is one of the oldest pilgrimage destinations in the Würzburg diocese and is still very important today. It is the destination of many pilgrimages, especially in September.
Legend
According to legend, the von Ravensburg family donated a chapel in the green valley after the murder of Bishop Konrad von Querfurt in 1202.
According to an etiological account , the von Thüngen men are said to have found a hare that had already been shot during a hunt. In his cave they found the statue of Mary with a scratch on the face while digging up the hare.
Building description
The original chapel from 1336 now forms the east choir of today's significantly enlarged church. Excavations brought to light evidence of an even older Romanesque predecessor church. The nave was built between 1622 and 1625. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the stair towers with onion domes and the pillars for the figures of Christ and Mary were added. In 1968 the roof of the nave collapsed due to a nocturnal thunderstorm, which was rebuilt according to plans by Hans skull . In the east and west, the historical building structure could be preserved, the nave was supplemented with modern materials. Bishop Josef Stangl inaugurated the renovated church on September 13, 1969. Another renovation of the roof and interior was completed in 1987 and brought the church building to its present state.
