The village of Chropaczow became part of the newly founded Parish St. Barbara in Königshütte in 1852 . Until then, it had belonged to the Magdalene parish in Beuthen . In 1872 the neighboring village of Lipine Chropaczows became the parish. Chropaczow quickly developed into an industrial town in the 19th century and it was not until 1904 that it was decided to build a church for the 10,500 local Catholics. Until then, only two chapels were available to the faithful. Max Giemsa from Katowice provided the design for the new church, which was to become a branch of Lipine. In 1910 construction work began in Chropaczow, which has now been renamed Silesia Mine. However, the subsoil was unstable due to the coal mining, so that the building had to be equipped with extensive concrete foundations. In 1912 the brick building was completed for 420,000 marks and consecrated in 1913. Finally, on March 11, 1921, the 11,500-strong community was raised to an independent parish by Archbishop Adolf Bertram of Breslau . In 1922 the place fell to Poland. In 1929 the rectory was completed. Due to mining damage , which, despite the complex foundations, first appeared in 1930, the city building authority closed the church in 1962 without providing replacement space. In 1964 an emergency church was built. On June 15, 1975 this makeshift church burned down together with the organ of the old church that had been moved there, but was restored in the same year. The closure of the Śląsk I coal mine made it possible for the community to return the church, which was threatened with demolition, to its old use. In 1980 the extensive renovation and repair of the old parish church began, which was made more difficult by the martial law imposed in socialist Poland in 1981 . Today the building is used again as the main church. In 1986 the secured church was reconciled and in 1999 new bells and a new organ were purchased.

Architecture and equipment

A neo-Romanesque brick basilica with a 40 m high, rectangular front tower was built on a cross-shaped, three-aisled floor plan based on a design by Max Giemsa (Kattowitz) . The interior of the church was also given a neo-Romanesque interior and wall paintings. For the important interior decoration, the sculptor Matthias Beule made the main altar based on the Klosterneuburg altar , the baptistery, the pulpit and the triumphal cross . The historical colored glazing was destroyed by mountain damage and replaced by modern ones during renovation.

Bells

In 1912, the Otto bell foundry in Bremen-Hemelingen produced a three-part bell and a deathdrop in the roof turret. Two bells were melted down for armaments purposes during the First World War. After the war, two new bells ("d 1 " 1700 kg and "g 1 " 750 kg) were again ordered from Otto. In the meantime, the eastern part of Upper Silesia with Chropaczow had fallen to Poland, so that the order from the German company became complicated and the bells could not be hung in the tower until 1928. During the Second World War, all three bells were again confiscated. Only two bells remained in the tower and the death of the valley from 1912 weighing 54 kg. Finally, in 1999, a new four-part bell with a total weight of 1660 kg was cast by the Polish company Felczyński.
