The Marian Anderson House is a residential building of historic significance in South Philadelphia .
According to historical city maps, the two-story terraced house was built between 1862 and 1874 in the Italianate style from brick tiles and with a flat roof . The base is L-shaped. Around 1925, a living studio was added above the rear, originally single-storey kitchen wing . From 1928 to 1940, the Marian Anderson House underwent extensive renovations. Among other things, the facade was renewed and a staircase was built in front of the entrance. The American opera singer Marian Anderson lived here from 1924 to 1943 . The walls in the entrance hall and on the first floor are decorated with strips of wood so that they look like paneling . This interior design probably goes back to the architect Orpheus Hodge Fisher, the husband of Marian Anderson. Today the Marian Anderson Historical Society resides in the house.
On April 14, 2011, the Marian Anderson House was added to the National Register of Historic Places .
