Marianne Lederer (* 1934 ) is a French translation scholar .

Life

Marianne Lederer was born in 1934. Since 1960 she has been a member of the AIIC and since 1979 Professor at the University of Paris III - Sorbonne Nouvelle. For 10 years she was director of ESIT (École supérieure d'interprètes et de traducteurs). In 1981 she completed her habilitation thesis La traduction simultanée - Fondements théoriques .

Lederer is one of the representatives of the so-called Paris School . Together with the translation scholar Danica Seleskovitch , she developed the theory of meaning , which later became known as the Interpretive Theory of Translation . The aim was to describe the translation process in more detail. The theory was based on the observation of oral translation (interpreting), but quickly expanded to include written translation.

It underlines the important role of the extra-linguistic knowledge taken from the “bagage cognitif”, the knowledge and experience of the translator, as well as the consideration of context and situation for the understanding of a statement.

According to this theory, which is now also confirmed by cognitive science, the linguistic signs largely disappear as soon as the (oral or written) statement has been understood; Danica Seleskovitch calls this phenomenon (ubiquitous in monolingual communication) “deverbalization”. In this way, both the interpreter and the translator can free themselves from the influence of the source language and express what is said in their language in an idiomatic way.

Together, Marianne Leder and Danica Seleskovitch wrote a large number of publications.

Marianne Lederer received the Danica Seleskovitch Prize in 2002 .
