Mariano Natalio Carrera (born July 22, 1980 in San Isidro ) is an Argentine boxer.

Professional career

Carrera played his first professional fight in May 2001. Until 2006 he fought with variable success exclusively in Argentina. Although he won the Argentine championship title in 2002 and the South American title in 2004, he also lost four fights against less well-known opponents during this period.

On December 2, 2006, in front of 3500 spectators in the Estrel Hotel in Berlin-Neukölln, he won the subordinate "regular" world title of the WBA against the Spanish defending champion Javier Castillejo . The actual world champion of the association, the so-called " WBA Superchampion ", was the American Jermain Taylor at that time . Carrera defeated Castillejo with a technical knockout in the eleventh of twelve laps. Referee Guillermo Pérez from Panama broke off the high-class and dogged fight after 1:53 minutes of the penultimate round, a decision that resulted in violent protests from Castillejo's coach Ricardo Atocha. After the WBA had revoked his title from Taylor in December, Carrera rose to become the association's sole title holder. However, since the substance Clenbuterol was detected in Carrera in the doping test , the WBA decided on February 22nd, 2007 to classify the fight as a "No Contest" or not and to appoint Castillejo as the title holder again. In addition, Carrera was blocked for a period of 6 months starting on December 2, 2006. On August 11, 2007 he won in the first round by heavy knockout against Tizeira .
