from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marie-Geneviève Navarre (* 1737 in Paris ; † September 1795 there ) was a French painter of the 18th century.

Navarre studied the technique of the pastel portrait with Maurice Quentin de La Tour and copied in oil. She exhibited in the Hôtel d'Aligre on Rue St. Honoré in 1762 and 1764. In 1774 she showed her works, together with Adélaïde Labille-Guiard , another student of de la Tour, in the Salon de la Correspondence . Navarre worked primarily as a portraitist, not least as a miniature painter for economic reasons . A brief, childless marriage ended in divorce in 1779. Navarre was a member of the Académie de Saint-Luc artists ' guild, which counted around 130 women among its approximately 4,500 members.

Currently only one signed work by the painter is known. It is located in the National Museum of Women in the Arts (Washington) .
