Marie-Thérèse Walter (born July 13, 1909 in Le Perreux-sur-Marne , † October 20, 1977 in Juan-les-Pins ) was a French model and the lover of the Spanish painter Pablo Picasso .

Life

Marie-Thérèse Walter met Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) for the first time on January 8, 1927 in the Galeries Lafayette . Her nature and her beauty fascinated the painter. He made her his model and later his secret lover. As long as he was still with Olga Chochlowa (1891–1955), he used Marie-Thérèse to escape from reality until she became pregnant by him. After the birth of his daughter María de la Concepción, called Maya Picasso (born October 5, 1935), he separated from his wife and lived openly with Marie-Thérèse. In 1937 he met Dora Maar and entered into another liaison with her . Picasso did not find the rivalry between the two women disturbing, on the contrary, it confirmed his ego and masculinity. Marie-Thérèse Walter hanged herself on October 20, 1977 in Juan-les-Pins ( suicide ). Her granddaughter is the art historian Diana Widmaier Picasso .

Others

In the American film “ My Man Picasso ” (1996) it is said that Pablo Picasso ( Anthony Hopkins ) spent two days a week with Marie-Thérèse ( Susannah Harker ). Françoise Gilot reported in Life with Picasso that he spent Thursday with Marie-Thérèse and Maya (Thursdays were free in France). She was the only person allowed to cut his hair and toenails ; these were kept locked up because he feared that they could be used to put a curse on him.

Marie-Thérèse Walter is very present in Picasso's work.

“Picasso's pictures, sculptures and hundreds of drawings and sketchbooks show that his relationship with Marie-Thérèse Walter, whom he met for the first time in 1931 [?], Was the sexually most important love affair for him. [...] Of the more than 500 pictures Picasso owns today, over 50 depict Marie-Thérèse. She is represented as a figure at least four times as often in his collection as any other subject. "
