Marienborg langdysse

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marie Borg Langdysse (German Dolmen of Marie Borg ) is a long barrow replica in the woods northwest of the "Kløvervænget" settlement north of Marienborg in western Danish island of Moen .

The north-east-south-west oriented megalithic bed is not rectangular like others, but oval and provided with a large stone at both ends. In the middle of the hill is a small rectangular stone chamber from which three bearing stones are visible on which a flat capstone rests.

Antoine de Bosc de la Calmette

At first glance, the complex looks like a real megalithic complex from the Stone Age, but this is not the case. The complex, imaginative in all areas, was built by landowner Antoine de Bosc de la Calmette (1752–1803) around 1790 as part of a romantic, English-inspired garden around Marienborg. He also created Liselund Park. Artificial structures - tombs or small temples - were often included in gardens of this period.

The landowner de la Calmette was a French Huguenot whose parents emigrated to the Netherlands. He grew up in Portugal and he bought Marienborg in 1776. Calmette was interested in history and was also responsible for the first dig in the passage grave at Klekkende Høj .

Calmette's interest in the past did not prevent him from using stones from old plants for the construction in the artificial romantic garden Marienborg. The almost three meter high monoliths at the ends originally stood on Askeby Field.

Most of the stones were reused in building and civil engineering before they were placed under protection. Barrows were an important supplier of building materials for the Romanesque stone churches of the 1200s, and numerous dolmens were smashed as gravel for the construction of railway lines, ports and roads.
