The Mariengrotte Dautweiler is a building in honor of the Mother of God Maria in the Dautweiler forest near the village Hasborn-Dautweiler in the municipality of Tholey . In addition to the cave, there are other buildings belonging to the Mariengrotte Dautweiler ensemble on the site.

history

The Mariengrotte was built in 1959 by the bricklayer Peter Brachmann (* 1911 , † 1994 ). During the Second World War he had vowed:
"When I return home happy from the war, I want to build a place of prayer and devotion in honor of the Blessed Mother Mary."
And with the help of his wife Monika Brachmann and his three sons, he built today's memorial in Dautweiler forest. The place of worship was consecrated at a solemn Holy Mass on September 13, 1959.

Building description

The center of the Mariengrotte is an undercut rock located on a slope. According to tradition, an old woman once lived in the grotto, which is why this place was given the name "Wildfrauenhäuschen". The interior of the cave is adorned with a candlestick and votive tablets and is surrounded by a protective fence. A cantilevered concrete slab was pulled in over this cave, which offers space for flower arrangements. This gallery is accessible via a side staircase. Above it is a wall made of natural stone with a niche for a life-size statue of Our Lady. The wall is crowned by a stainless steel cross, which was inserted around 2010 instead of the original stone cross.

A stone pulpit was erected to the right of the Mariengrotto, which is used during church services. To the left in front of the building is a stone canopy with a kneeling figure of Bernadette Soubirous , which refers to the reference of this place of worship to the apparition of Mary in Lourdes .

Immediately in front of it flows the Raupenbach, over which a bridge leads to the Mariengrotte. The surrounding benches were donated by the Hasborn-Dautweiler civil parish.

A little to the side is a fountain with the year 1959.

use

The Lourdes Grotto is still looked after today by the descendants of Peter Brachmann. The continuously burning candles testify to the regular use of the place of worship by believers for personal prayer. On August 16, 2009, the 50th anniversary of the Marian Grotto was celebrated with a large festive service and a subsequent festival.
