Marija Gigowa ( Bulgarian Мария Гигова , born April 21, 1947 in Sofia ) is a former Bulgarian gymnast and multiple world champion.

Life

She graduated from the Georgi Dimitrov University of Physical Culture and Sports in Sofia and was active as an athlete in rhythmic gymnastics . She became world champion several times. At the World Championships in rhythmic gymnastics in 1967 , she won gold on the hoop. During the 1969 World Championships she won gold in the individual all-around in the exercise without a handheld device and on the hoop, and also silver on the rope and ball. At the 1971 World Championships she won gold in the individual all-around, on the hoop and rope. During the 1973 World Championships she was again world champion in the individual all-around and on the tire. She achieved the bronze medal on the clubs and on the ribbon.

She was awarded the Order of Georgi Dimitrov and a Hero of Socialist Work .
