Naval base Evangelos Florakis

The Naval Base Evangelos Florakis ( Greek Ναυτική Βάση "Ευάγγελος Φλωράκης" ) is a naval base of the Cypriot National Guard and is located on the south coast of the Republic of Cyprus about 50 kilometers east of Limassol and 50 kilometers west of Larnaca at the places Mari and Zygi , near the A1 motorway . It was named after the leader of the Cypriot National Guard Evangelos Florakis , who, along with four other people, had a fatal accident in a military helicopter on July 11, 2002.

In the early morning of July 11, 2011, an ammunition explosion occurred on the site of the naval base, killing 15 and injuring over 60. The explosion destroyed parts of the neighboring large Stavros Vassiliko power station .

As a result of this incident, Defense Minister Kostas Papakostas and the commander of the Cypriot National Guard Petros Tsalikidis resigned from their posts.
