The Marinefliegergeschwader 1 ( MFG 1 ) was an aircraft squadron of the German Navy , which existed from 1959 to 1993.

history

1st Naval Aviation Group 1957–1959

In the Navy's formation order No. 62 of March 12, 1957, the formation of the 1st Naval Aviation Group (1st MFGr) was ordered from April 1, 1957. The 1st MFGr should consist of a submarine squadron, a transport and supply squadron and a flight operations squadron at the Jagel location .

On May 19, 1958, the 1st multipurpose squadron was put into service at the Scottish naval aviation base RNAS Lossiemouth . She was equipped with eight Hawker Sea Hawk Mk 100s . One day later the submarine fighter squadron, equipped with 16 Fairey Gannet HS Mk4s , was put into service in Eglington, Northern Ireland .

On July 1, 1959, the 1st Marine Aviation Group was renamed Marinefliegergeschwader 1

MFG 1 1960–1990

In 1961, the submarine squadron was placed under Naval Aviation Squadron 2 and replaced by the 1st reconnaissance squadron equipped with Sea Hawks .

In the spring of 1963, the MFG 1 was converted to the new Lockheed F-104 G Starfighter . On November 11, 1963, the first naval starfighter landed at the air base. By 1978 the squadron had flown 145,000 flight hours, of which around 112,000 were on the F-104G. In the more than 18 years of the Starfighter's service, eleven pilots of the squadron lost their lives in 38 serious accidents. By the time the Panavia PA 200 Tornado was introduced in 1981, the MFG 1 starfighters had achieved 132,000 flight hours.

In 1981 the squadron's first tornado landed in Jagel. On July 2, 1982, MFG 1 was the first Bundeswehr unit to be equipped with the tornado. On December 17, 1982, the 1000th flight hour was flown with the new weapon system.

In August 1985, two tornadoes moved to America. As a special feature, the machines in the air were not refueled by tankers , but by the squadron's own tornadoes, which had already been moved to Beja (southern Portugal) and Lajes (Azores).

The 200,000th flight hour (approx. 35,000 with a tornado) was celebrated in July 1987.

MFG 1 1990-1993

In early 1991 it became known that MFG 1 would be dissolved.

On May 27, 1993, the squadron's 75,000th tornado hour was flown.

On December 21, 1993, MFG 1 was decommissioned with effect from December 31, 1993 and the 2nd / MFG 1 was integrated into MFG 2 as the 3rd season.

The squadron coat of arms

The coat of arms of MFG 1 consists of a blue and gold-yellow bordered, white-primed shield with black letters (MFG 1) on a gold-yellow and white background in the upper third. Below in the middle is a plunging sea eagle with a golden yellow beak over three stylized blue waves with white spray.

The falling sea eagle was already included in the coat of arms of Kampfgeschwader 30 , which was mainly used at sea during World War II.
