Berthold Jung
Berthold Jung (* 1915 ; † January 11, 1992 ) was a German naval officer , most recently rear admiral in the German Navy .
Navy and post-war period
Jung joined the Navy in 1935 as a midshipman , where he was trained first as a naval officer and then as a naval aviator . After completing his flight training, he switched to fighter pilots, where he became a squadron captain in 1940. In 1941 he was shot down near Crete and became a British prisoner of war, which he spent in Australia until 1947 .
When he returned to Germany, he trained as an interpreter and worked in the Stuttgart regional council.
Federal Navy
In November 1956, Jung joined the new German Navy . In the USA he received aeronautical refresher training on propeller and jet aircraft. He then became group commander in the 1st Marine Aviation Squadron and then completed admiralty staff training at the Naval War College of the United States Navy in Newport (Rhode Island) . In August 1963 he became a commodore of the 1st Marine Aviation Squadron , which was renamed Marinefliegergeschwader 1 on October 1, 1963 .
In June 1965 Jung was transferred to the fleet command, where he was employed as department head A 3 and chief of staff . Jung returned to aviation service in March 1966 and, as a flotilla admiral, became the commander of the Naval Aviation Command , which was renamed the Naval Aviation Command in 1967 and the Naval Aviation Division in 1969 .
In October 1970, Jung was appointed as Rear Admiral in command of the Schleswig-Holstein Territorial Command in Kiel . On September 30, 1973 he retired.
retirement
After his retirement, Jung got involved in social projects and worked as a rehabilitation worker for prisoners. He was also chairman of the German Red Cross in Kiel.
