Mario Chiari

Mario Chiari (born July 14, 1909 in Florence , † April 10, 1989 in Rome ) was an Italian production designer and film director .

Life

Chiari started at the Dei Gufi Experimental Theater in his hometown in 1936 . Almost a decade later he began working with Luchino Visconti ; other partners were Giorgio Strehler , Elio Pandolfi and Vittorio Gassman . In 1940 he started working for film as an assistant director and occasional actor , from 1945 he worked as an outfitter and costume designer for numerous films, making him one of the most famous of his guild in Italian film history. His filmography includes classics such as La carozza d'oro and Le notti bianche , Miracolo a Milano and La bibbia .

Again and again, beginning in 1953, Chiari has also directed; eight films were made, including works for television.

He was nominated for an Oscar for his work with Doctor Dolittle .
