Mário Lúcio (born October 21, 1964 as Lúcio Matias de Sousa Mendes in Tarrafal on the island of Santiago , Cape Verde Islands ) is a Cape Verde singer, composer and painter. In 2011 he was appointed Cape Verdean cultural ambassador. From 2011 to 2016, Mário Lúcio was Minister of Culture of Cape Verde.

Life

Mário Lúcio lost his father when he was 12 years old. When he was 15 years old, he and his seven siblings were orphans when his mother died. From the age of 12 he lived in a barracks area of ​​the Cape Verdean armed forces in his hometown under the care of the military. After finishing high school he received a state scholarship to study at the university in the Cape Verdean capital Praia . In 1984 he received a scholarship from the Cuban government to study law in Havana . He graduated there six years later. He went back to Cape Verde and practiced there as an independent lawyer. From 1996 to 2001 he was a member of the Cape Verdean parliament . From 1992 he served as an advisor to the Minister of Culture.

Mário Lúcio is the founder and leader of the Simentera music group , which marked a turning point in the direction of acoustic music in Cape Verde. His ideas brought him an invitation from the Cape Verde government to serve as advisor to the commissioner and author of the Cape Verde Musical Project for Expo 92 in Seville and Expo 98 in Lisbon. He is a multi-instrumentalist and has edited many albums by Cape Verdean artists. He is the founder and director of the Quintal da Música Cultural Association , whose private cultural center works to promote traditional music. Children learn there to use their talents. As a composer he is a member of SACEM (Societé française des Droits d'auteur), with compositions recorded by Cesária Évora and other Cape Verdean artists. He is the permanent composer of the Raiz di Polon Company , the island group's only contemporary dance group. At the request of the Porto European Culture Capital, he composed the soundtrack for the piece “Adão e as Sete Pretas de Fuligem”. The play was brought to the stage by João Branco. He is the founder of the Fesquintal de Jazz, the Cape Verde International Jazz Festival. He has already appeared on the stage in the USA, Brazil, Cuba as well as in many European countries and in Africa.

He is also successful as a painter and has participated in several exhibitions.
