Mark Franchetti

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mark Franchetti (* in Italy ) is a British journalist .

Franchetti has worked as Russia correspondent for the Sunday Times since 2001 . He received the British Press Award in 2003 for reporting on the hostage-taking in Moscow's Dubrovka Theater .

In 2007 he created a documentary for the BBC about Andrei Lugovoi , who was involved in the Litvinenko case. In 2013 he was the producer of the documentary The Condemned about a prison camp in Russia.

On June 13, 2014, Franchetti was connected to the Ukrainian TV talk show Schuster live by journalist Sawik Schuster on Inter TV . Up until the week before the broadcast in eastern Ukraine as part of the Ukraine crisis in 2014, he had accompanied the separatist combat unit "Vostok" for about three weeks, a firefight at Marinovka and the unit's subsequent transfer to Russia and the arrest and disarmament of the Russian troops witnessed unity. Franchetti said on the program, among other things, that the unit did not have modern weapons or Russian support. There were hardly any Russian fighters in this unit. Franchetti's statements sparked resentment and opposition from the participants in the talk show, including Anton Gerashchenko, advisor to the Ukrainian interior minister, Arsen Avakov.

Franchetti wrote: " So it was with some amusement last week that I watched myself become flavor of the month with the Kremlin and its supporters - a pawn in the fierce propaganda was being waged between Ukraine and Russia." ("I was slightly amused to see that for the Kremlin and its supporters I became their hippest pawn in the terrifying propaganda war between Russia and Ukraine".) In September he wrote in a balance sheet: When it comes to propaganda, the arrow is on the scale who weighs sins strongly in the direction of Moscow. The use of the state media is unscrupulous, toxic and insidious like in Soviet times.
