Sawik Schuster (2013)

Sawik Mikhailovich Schuster (or Savik Shuster , Ukrainian Савік Михайлович Шустер ; Russian Савик Михайлович Шустер * 22. November 1952 in Vilnius , Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic ) is a journalist and was moderator of the Ukrainian talk show Schuster Live . He has Canadian and Italian citizenship.

Life

Schuster was born as Ševelis Šusteris (Шевеліс Шустеріс) in Vilnius and grew up in the Soviet Union . However, he left with his parents in 1971 to emigrate to Canada via Vilnius. Schuster studied medicine in Montreal and later went to Florence in Italy to continue his studies there. It was there that he met his future wife. After completing his studies, however, he did not work as a doctor, but as a journalist for a newspaper, because in the meantime he had noticed that he "didn't like sick people".

From 1988 to 2001 Schuster worked for Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty . He had reported from Afghanistan about the war there and interviewed commanders of the Mujadehin . According to its own information, this happened during secret negotiations about a protected withdrawal of Soviet troops from the country. In response to a request from the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Diego Cordovez Zegers, he had initiated the first meeting of such commanders and achieved a promise that Soviet President Gorbachev had demanded as a condition for the withdrawal of troops: he demanded a guarantee from the United Nations that not a single Soviet soldier would be killed on withdrawal. A week after Sawik Schuster reported the outcome of the meeting, the Geneva Agreement was signed, which de-internationalized Afghan affairs and made the withdrawal possible. Due to the official work in Afghanistan for Radio Free Europe, he was offered a job at the headquarters in Munich, which he refused. He then began his career in Russian television, where he worked for NTW from 2001 to 2004 . After the takeover of NTW by the state company Gazprom , Schuster's broadcast was discontinued and Schuster went to Kiev. There Savik Schuster was one of the most popular television presenters alongside Yevgeny Kisseljow .

In addition to Russian, Schuster also speaks Lithuanian, English, Italian and French. He lives in Florence with his wife and children.

Schuster Live

Schuster directed the political talk show “Schuster LIVE” on the TV channel “tv 3S” and is the general director of the production company “Savik Shuster Studio”. Schuster presented his program "Schuster Live" in Russian, which is a politically problematic topic in Ukraine. However, he stated in an interview in 2008 that he was given permission because he was not a "Moskal". "Moskal" is a disparaging term for an ethnic Russian in Ukraine. In 2016, his work permit was withdrawn because of criticism of the Ukrainian government and Petro Poroshenko . In January 2016, criminal proceedings were opened on charges of tax evasion based on the results of the tax audit carried out by Savik Shuster Studio . The OSCE raised concerns about press freedom. Schuster went on a hunger strike . Its broadcast ended in March 2017.
