Mark Geller

Markham Judah Geller (* 1949 ) is an American ancient orientalist .

Life

He completed his first degree in Classics at Princeton University (BA 1970 A Study of Pseudo-Philo's Liber Antiquitatum Biblicarum ), of which he spent a year at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem . He received his PhD in Mediterranean Studies from Brandeis University in 1973 , where he was introduced to several Semitic languages, including Aramaic, Akkadian, Ugaritic, and Arabic, and wrote his dissertation on Aramaic magic bowls in relation to rabbinic texts. He is the Jewish Chronicle Professor of Jewish Studies at University College London .
