Mark Overmars

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Markus "Mark" Hendrik Overmars (born September 29, 1958 in Zeist ) is a Dutch computer scientist . He heads the Center for Geometry, Imaging, and Virtual Environments (GIVE) at Utrecht University .

Mark Overmars has written some software for work and leisure. His most popular works are the GUI toolkit XForms and the Game Maker program , which allows computer games to be created without having to learn a complex programming language .

Today the GameMaker is being further developed by YoYoGames and is available in different versions. The software can also export the written games to various devices (including iOS, Android, Tizen, Linux and Sony's Playstation). Overmars is a co-leader of YoYoGames but has retired from the company. The current version of GameMaker is GameMaker Studio. In mid-2014, the software was downloaded more than two million times and is therefore an integral part of the indie developer scene.

Overmars received his PhD in 1983 from the University of Utrecht under Jan van Leeuwen ( The design of dynamic data structures ).

Overmars also deals with computational geometry, including virtual worlds and geographic information systems and robotics. In 1992 he developed the Probabilistic Roadmap Method in Robotics and wrote a textbook on Computational Geometry.

Overmars is currently no longer working as a professor at Utrecht University, but is building his own company, Tingly Games, with which he concentrates on game development.
