The Markel Corporation is an international insurance company based in Richmond in the State of Virginia . The German headquarters are in Munich .

history

The Markel Corporation was founded in 1920 by Sam A. Markel. Subsequent generations of members of the Markel family have developed the company into a global niche insurer. Today Markel is a specialist insurer for commercial and industrial insurance. One focus is on protection against financial losses. Markel has been listed on the New York Stock Exchange since 1986 . Its market capitalization (January 2013) is around $ 4.3 billion. The company managed around USD 2.5 billion in gross premiums in 2012 with around 2,600 employees worldwide.

The end of 2012 took place the acquisition of Alterra Capital 1.9 billion gross premium and 490 employees to round in the "Global Corporates" and "reinsurance". Business is also written through Lloyd's Syndicate 3000 or Markel International Insurance Company Limited (MIICL).

Germany

Markel International Germany is a specialist insurer for commercial and industrial risks with many years of experience in dealing with complex risks.

The focus is on professional and financial loss liability, financial lines and general liability.

In October 2014 Markel International acquired all shares in MDT Makler der Touristik GmbH Assekuranzmakler, Dreieich. The company, based near Frankfurt am Main, is a leading provider of insurance solutions for the German travel industry as an underwriter and broker.

The acquisition follows Markel's acquisition of Anglo Underwriting in 2012 and the subsequent establishment of Markel's German branch in 2013. With the acquisition, Markel is pursuing the establishment of a qualified niche and specialty insurer.
