Market Street Railway (San Francisco)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Market Street Railway Company (MSR) was a privately owned local transport company in San Francisco , which from 1860 initially operated steam trams and horse-drawn trams , and later cable cars , trams , trolleybuses and omnibuses in the city. It went on in 1944 in the municipal transport company, the still existing San Francisco Municipal Railway ("Muni"). Many of the company's tram lines are still operated today as trolley or omnibus lines, some with the same line number and name.

Market Street Railway Co.

history

On July 4, 1860, what was then known as the San Francisco Market Street Railroad opened a standard-gauge steam tram along Market Street , the city's main thoroughfare after which the company was named. The route ran from the corner of Third Street through Market Street and Valencia Street to 16th Street. After a short time the steam operation was stopped and the wagons were pulled by horses. In the late 1860s, the San Francisco and San Jose Railroad acquired the train and renamed the company the Market Street Railway for the first time . The Southern Pacific Railroad later bought the railway together with the San Francisco & San Jose. In 1882 the company was renamed Market Street Cable Railway , as numerous cable car routes were planned and were built in the following years. The existing horse-drawn trams were also partially converted into cable cars, including the original route of the railway company through Market and Valencia Street. In 1887, the railway company took over the Geary Street, Park and Ocean Railway , which operated cable cars along Geary Street with a gauge of five feet (1,524 mm). The line was converted to standard gauge in 1892.

On October 13, 1893, the company merged with a number of other small tram companies to form the new Market Street Railway . At this point the Central Railroad, the City Railroad, the Ferries and Cliffhouse Railway, the Market Street and Fairmount Railway, the North Beach and Mission Railroad, the Omnibus Cable Company, the Park and Ocean Railroad, the Potrero and Bay View Railroad were taken over , the Ocean Beach Railway, and the Southern Heights and Visitacion Railway. All of these companies owned streetcars in and around San Francisco, which were now a common network. The routes had different gauges, including those with a five-foot gauge, but also routes in three feet (914 mm) and Cape gauge (1067 mm).

Electric trams on Market Street shortly after the earthquake of 1906, the now unused slots for the cable cars can still be seen between the rails.

Another merger gave the railway company a new name. On March 4, 1902, the MSR merged with the Sutter Street Railway, the Sutro Railroad and the San Francisco and San Mateo Electric Railway to form the United Railroads of San Francisco . Legally, the Market Street Railway Company continued to exist as a subsidiary of United Railroads. The earthquake in San Francisco on April 18, 1906 and the resulting major fires destroyed numerous lines, depot facilities and vehicles. Only the steepest cable car routes were then rebuilt, the others were converted into electric trams. The electric tram on Market Street went into operation on May 3, 1906. The cable car routes retained their gauge, they still run on Cape Gauge tracks today, the other routes have been rebuilt with standard gauge. Some routes disappeared without replacement, such as the tram through Dupont Street (now Grant Avenue).

In 1918 the United Railroads went bankrupt and in 1921 they were sold to their own subsidiary. Since then, the company has operated again as Market Street Railway Company . From the 1920s, the route network was thinned out, some routes were omitted without replacement, others were converted into trolleybus routes from 1935. The first route of the trolleybus San Francisco was from October 6, 1935 the line 33, Stanyan Street – Twin Peaks – 18th Street – Harrison Street, which still operates on a large part of this route today. On September 29, 1944, the San Francisco Municipal Railway took over the Market Street Railway and converted all tram lines to trolleybus or omnibus operation by 1949. The route in Market Street was preserved because the Muni rebuilt the four-track system around its own two (outer) tracks to two tracks and thereby used the MSR tracks. The line from Ocean Avenue / Brighton Avenue through Ocean Avenue and Onondaga Avenue to Mission Street (Line K) was also continued to be used, but the tracks were removed from Onondaga Avenue in the 1950s. The Powell & Mason cable car route also continued to operate and is still in service today. Today's Powell & Hyde cable car line runs between Powell Street and Hyde Street / Jackson Street also on former MSR tracks.

Some former MSR lines were rebuilt from the 1980s, namely the line in San Jose Avenue from Balboa Park to Broad Street (1980, line M), the line from Church Street to Balboa Park (1991, line J) , and the route through Third Street (2007, line T). The non-profit organization Market Street Railway was named after the railway company in 1976 and restores old tram vehicles that are used on the Muni's cable car lines and tram line F.

Line network

In 1921, when the Market Street Railway had taken over operations from United Railroads, the following line network existed (at that time only electric trams and cable cars). Some lines did not have a number, this applies to all cable car lines, but also to electrical lines. All lines also had an official line name that was used in timetables, and most of them had a line color, which was used to label the destination signs on the right front fender.

There was no line 13 on the Market Street Railway network. After 1921 a few new lines were opened. Line 31 ("Balboa", line color white), which opened on May 15, 1932, was the only one with a new line. The line started at 30th Av / Balboa St and went via Balboa St - Turk St - Mason St (→) / Divisadero St (←) - Eddy St - Market St to Ferry Plaza. From January 15, 1939, she ran to East Bay Terminal. From February 12 to October 2, 1947, on weekdays, the trains already ended at Eddy St / Powell St, after which all cars drove to Ferry Plaza. From October 6, 1947, trams only ran on line 31 on weekdays. They ended at Eddy St / Market St. from March 21, 1949. On July 3, 1949, the line was replaced by buses, later by O- Buses.
