Markham Valley

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Markham Valley is a geographic area in New Guinea .

Geographical location

The Markham Valley is described as "flatter than a pancake for miles in every direction as far as the mountains surrounding it on three sides." The Highlands Highway runs through the valley, just as the Markham River crosses it to its mouth at Lae . Together with the subsequent valley of the Ramu , which runs in its extension, it has a length of about 610 km and a width between 8 and 40 km. In the north it is bordered by the Finisterre Mountains and in the south by the Kraetke Mountains . When it rains heavily, the Markham overflows, making roads and bridges impassable.

Agricultural use

The ground is partly sandy and grassy. Parts of the valley are used for agriculture, around 10% of which is used for livestock. Livestock is used to supply meat and dairy products. Peanuts, cocoa, sorghum, rice and corn are also grown.
